Frequently asked questions
Who should get certified?
Any Australian business that integrates AI into its operations or develops AI solutions for others should consider certification. This includes entities registered with an Australian Business Number (ABN) and primarily operating within Australia.
For AI users, if your business uses AI for decision-making, customer interactions, automation or other processes, certification demonstrates your commitment to ethical and responsible AI practices.
For AI developers, if you build, design or deploy AI tools for clients or partners, certification highlights adherence to safety standards and best practices.
Our certification assures consumers, stakeholders and partners that your AI practices align with the Australian AI Ethics Principles, promoting trust and compliance.
What does each certification tier represent?
We offer three progressive tiers: Commit, Embed and Govern, recognising increasing levels of commitment to responsible AI.
Commit Certification represents a foundational commitment through signing the Responsible AI Pledge. It is ideal for businesses starting their ethical AI journey.
Embed Certification builds on the Pledge by implementing a Responsible AI Policy and integrating ethics into daily operations.
Govern Certification is the highest tier, requiring the Pledge, a Policy and a Governance Framework that includes risk management, oversight roles, impact assessments and accountability mechanisms, all consistent with the Australian AI Ethics Principles.
The Company determines your tier based on your application and assessment, not self-selection.
What is the Responsible AI Pledge?
The Responsible AI Pledge is a foundational commitment that all certified businesses must sign. It affirms dedication to the eight Australian AI Ethics Principles: human, societal and environmental wellbeing; human-centred values; fairness; privacy and security; reliability and safety; transparency and explainability; contestability; and accountability.
It also includes refraining from prohibited high-risk AI practices such as manipulative techniques causing harm, exploiting vulnerable groups or unlawful system intrusions. The Pledge applies to all AI systems your organisation develops, procures or uses.
What are the benefits of certification?
Certification builds public trust, differentiates your business in an AI-driven market and prepares you for evolving Australian AI regulations.
It provides a verifiable badge ("Certified by Responsible AI Australia") for marketing and partnerships, listing in our public searchable register showcasing your ethical practices, and guidance on compliance with standards such as the Privacy Act 1988 and future AI frameworks.
It also enhances credibility with customers, investors and stakeholders, reducing risks such as reputational harm.
Certification is accessible for businesses of all sizes, with tiered pricing based on employee count.
What are the costs associated with certification?
Our certification is designed to be affordable and scalable. Pricing is tiered based on your organisation's number of employees, ensuring accessibility for startups, SMEs and enterprises.
Costs cover assessment, verification and ongoing support.
For detailed pricing, visit our pricing page. Note that payment is required only after approval.
What is the certification process?
The process is straightforward and detailed in Annexure 1 of our Rules.
Submit your application via our website, providing business details (including ABN for eligibility verification), uploading your logo and completing the Responsible AI Application Questionnaire (12 questions on AI use, ethics and governance).
Sign the Responsible AI Pledge. An independent Assessor reviews your responses, alignment with the Pledge and any supporting documents (such as policies for higher tiers). A follow-up video call may be requested.
We assign your tier (Commit, Embed or Govern) and issue certification upon payment. Your profile appears in our searchable register, displaying status, tier, logo and redacted questionnaire responses.
The process ensures transparency and typically takes two to four weeks.
What questions are in the Responsible AI Application Questionnaire?
The questionnaire assesses your AI maturity and ethics, with responses helping determine your tier.
Questions 1 to 6 (mandatory) cover AI usage, tools, risk mitigation, ethical frameworks, privacy and security, and bias prevention.
Questions 7 to 12 (encouraged for higher tiers) address high-risk areas, documentation, audits, contestability, environmental impact and societal benefits or scaling plans.
Use yes or no, selections or brief text. Simple answers will not disqualify you. Guidance and examples are provided for each.
How do you handle privacy and data in applications?
All data is collected, stored and processed in compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and our Privacy Policy. Sensitive information remains confidential and is used only for certification.
Public register profiles include redacted questionnaire responses to protect commercial sensitivity.
Is certification necessary to renew annually?
Yes. Certification is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually to maintain your status and use of the Mark.
What is the renewal process?
We initiate renewal automatically, notifying you at least two months before expiry with reminders.
Provide updated evidence of compliance (such as questionnaire updates) upon request. Renewal involves examination to confirm ongoing adherence to your tier's requirements. Refer to Annexure 1 for details.
What are the consequences of failing to renew certification?
Failure to renew results in revocation of certification and loss of rights to use the Mark. Continued unauthorised use may lead to legal action under the Trade Marks Act 1995 (Cth).
How can I report unethical AI use by a certified business, and what is the procedure?
Submit complaints via our designated form on the website. We will acknowledge receipt, notify the business and investigate.
The business has 28 calendar days to respond and implement remedial actions if needed. If unresolved, certification may be revoked.

How does certification align with Australian AI regulations?
Our program is based on the Australian AI Ethics Principles and anticipates future legislation (such as evolving standards from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources).
It helps businesses comply voluntarily and prepares them for potential mandatory requirements in high-risk AI areas.
Can non-Australian businesses get certified?
Certification is available only to Australian businesses (ABN-registered and primarily operating in Australia).
International entities with Australian operations should contact us to discuss eligibility.
What if my business does not meet higher tier requirements yet?
Start with Commit Certification via the Pledge. It is entry-level and provides a pathway to upgrade as you implement policies and frameworks.
We offer guidance for progression.
